Thank you! This is so informative! We actually can our own tomato sauce from the tomatoes we grow ourselves because I cannot Stand the common sore-bought sauces - but I realize not everyone can do this - and we have been following a gluten free lifestyle for a long while, so have spent s lot of time reading labels (the ingredients are often shocking, disgusting & unnecessary - esp. the amount of sugar!) - but there is always new information out there to learn, and they're constantly changing things on us - usually not for the better! I greatly appreciate you sharing this information. 😀
A great breakdown of how to actually read the labels on these foods, thanks Jack!
When I look at the contents and see things like “spices” or “flavouring” it makes me go “hmmm, does that mean they can put whatever they want in there as long as it tastes like something?” I wonder what random chemicals taste like?
The next step is to buy fresh or canned tomatoes, some onion, celery, garlic, spices, and tomato paste and make your own sauce, which isn’t hard to do either.
I learned so much in this article, Jack. Xantham gum, Canola oil, sea salt vs table salt.. great piece. Will be taking a closer look at the nutrition label when I go to the store now.
This is a great example of how to decipher nutrition labels. It can be quite confusing.
It's almost a full time job trying to eat healthy, especially in America. One has to be a detective all the time.
