Misread the title as “Is Starbucks coffee making you twerk” - OTAs really are getting to me, I guess. Great read, came away with some legit learnings and inspiration to buy organic. 👊

Isn't it weird that we probably never considered mold and pesticides when it comes to coffee? I mean, produce yes but coffee?

Yes! Years ago when I had a toddler I drank ALL the coffee. At the same time I began to feel dizzy the entire day. Thinking I must have a brain tumor or something I went to see a doctor.

That’s huge because I try my best to avoid conventional medicine.

She told me to drink more water… Already tried that. It wasn’t a water thing.

Switching to organic The dizziness went away.

As a follower of Asprey and Greenfield I also look for low mold coffees.

Well said my friend 😊

Is there anything similar with tea?

I don’t drink coffee (because even half a cup sends me into outer space, anxiety, and digestive issues…to name a few side effects) but I am an avid tea drinker. I can easily have two or three cups of black tea a day with the odd matcha mixed in.

Does tea have mold? I drink a mixture of tea leaves bought at independent shops and some tea bags from my local British store. I imagine the teabags have been sitting on the shelf awhile, especially since they’re imported.

Hey Elizabeth, great question. I haven't heard of mold on teas, but I know some teas are sprayed with pesticides so make sure to buy organic.

I would also be careful with tea bags. Some are bleached and have microplastics so make sure the tea bag is organic and non bleached. Loose leaf tea seems like the best option. Hope this helps!!! Let me know any thing else I got you!!

"More espresso less depresso" is hilarious! 🤣 Ewww, I've heard about the pesticides but not the MOLD! Lucky for me, coffee in Europe is delicious and they're super strict about what goes in their food. One brand my coworker always brings from home is Winans. It's really yummy, so I'll have to check if they're organic. Great newsletter!

Sandra!! Epic comment and yes I try to make this funny lol. Yeah what a crazy concept right? Blew my mind too. Europe seems to do a ton of things right with food and beverage regulations. The west has some catching up to do... Happy Monday!! Please let me know if I can help you with anything:)

Great article! Ironically, I read this while waiting for my fancy coffee to be made at a local Starbucks-like chain. Even more reason to stop spending on overpriced convenience drinks that aren’t good for me anyway. 🤷🏻‍♀️☕️🙃

Kris, thank you for taking the time to read the article!! You made my morning. Coffee is a deceptive little bugger, isn’t it? Once I figured it out, I was able to find the best coffee that was actually good for me. I’m sure you’ll find it too. If you’re in a particular city, I can help you find some. Anyway, thank you so much, and please let me know if there’s anything I can do to help you. Much love - Jack

We're based in Minneapolis. We mostly brew our own coffee at home and use a mushroom coffee mix. If you have any info on Laird Mushroom Coffee/Mocha/Creamers, I'd love to know! Thx :)

Thanks for your take on this Jack - interesting!

I've been a bit coffee obsessed over the past few weeks as I've been writing a series on it. I agree the other substances in the coffee also have bodily effects (especially the pooping). But I reckon things like the grind of the beans and extraction time are also at play here. There's huge variation in the amount of caffeine in an espresso shot, depending on how it's prepared. More caffeine, more anxiety and jitters.

Expand full comment
Jack Livaditis's avatar

Lauren, that is such an interesting point. I also learned that the longer the coffee bean sits in water, the more caffeine is extracted from it. So, an espresso shot, which is only exposed to water for 20 seconds, has less caffeine, while cold brew steeped in water for 24 hours has the most. Great points on the grind as well. And yes, the pooping is both a blessing and a curse!

Yeah for sure. Volume makes a difference too- the big giant drip coffee can have a whole day’s worth of caffeine in it.

And for more on the pooping-
